Mirroring the Raspbian Repository (raspmirror)

The recommended way to mirror the Raspbian repository is to use raspmirror. This will result in less server load for us then using rsync, will always update your mirror to a consistent state, and can use the mirror redirection system to retrieve files from other local mirrors rather than always pulling them from the main server. If you also have a Debian mirror locally then raspbmirror can use it to save bandwidth and potentially disk space. raspmirror can be obtained from https://github.com/plugwash/raspbian-tools/raw/master/raspbmirror.py

Basic usage (replace /path/to/raspmirror.py with the path to raspmirror.py on your system):

mkdir raspbian
mkdir tmp
cd raspbian
/path/to/raspbmirror.py --tmpdir ../tmp

The tmpdir option is optional, but is highly recommended. If it is not used temporary files will be stored within the mirror tree, which may cause problems if people try to set up downstream mirrors from your mirror using generic tools. tmpdir needs to be on the same filesystem as the mirror as files will be downloaded there and then renamed into place.

If you wish to mirror only the main archive and not the other materials on archive.raspbian.org please use the option --tlwhitelist raspbian

If you have a Debian mirror on the same machine you can use it to save bandwidth and (if the two mirrors are on the same filesystem) disk space when mirroring Raspbian. To do so use the option --sourcepool /path/to/debian/pool (replacing /path/to/debian/pool with the path to the pool directory of your Debian mirror).

If you are switching from rsync to raspmirror then please ensure your mirror is in a consistent state using rsync. Then run raspmirror from the top-level directory of your mirror (the directory containing the file "snapshotindex.txt").

Mirroring the Raspbian Repository (rsync)

Mirroring of the full Raspbian repository can be accomplished with rsync at archive.raspbian.org::archive. We will continue to support this method for public mirrors who are unwilling or unable to use raspbmirror. However it may become nessacery to restrict rsync access for private use. Please consider using raspmirror instead.

Sample syntax to mirror the archive would be:

rsync --archive --verbose --delete --delete-delay --delay-updates \
    archive.raspbian.org::archive /path/to/local/mirror

The '--dry-run' option can be used to first test out connectivity before attempting a full mirror.

The mirror redirection system

The mirror redirection system is available at http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/ . It provides the same files as http://archive.raspbian.org/ and can be used in apt sources etc. It is powered by mirrorbrain and will automatically direct requests to a suitable (and hopefully local) mirror (note: for technical reasons not all files are redirected).

Note: not all mirrors listed above are included in the mirror redirection system. We only include mirrors in the redirection system when they have given us explicit permission to do so.

If you want to be included in the mirror redirection system please include in your email permission to do so and information about what geographical area you are prepared to have us send you users from (note: while we will try to send you users only from the area you request the geolocation databases we use are imperfect so we cannot gaurantee that you will not be sent users from outside of the area you specify).

New mirrors in the US and Europe will only be added to the mirror redirection system if they support IPv6 and rsync.

Currently, the repository itself is about 400GB in size with approximately a further 20GB in images etc. Anyone hosting a Raspbian repository mirror should plan on devoting about 500GB to handle future anticipated growth of the repository.

If you wish to mirror only the main archive and not the other materials on archive.raspbian.org please use the option {{{--tlwhitelist raspbian}}}

If you have a Debian mirror on the same machine you can use it to save bandwidth and (if the two mirrors are on the same filesystem) disk space when mirroring Raspbian. To do so use the option {{{--sourcepool /path/to/debian/pool}}} (replacing /path/to/debian/pool with the path to the pool directory of your Debian mirror).
