Welcome to Raspbian
Raspbian is a free operating system based on Debian for the Raspberry Pi. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your Raspberry Pi run.
Raspbian provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over 34,000 packages, pre-compiled software bundled in a nice format for easy installation on your Raspberry Pi.
Raspbian is still under development. The initial build of all Debian packages, optimized for best performance on the Raspberry Pi, is anticipated to be complete by early June. However, for those eager to try Raspbian, early community supported images that can be run on the Raspberry Pi are available for download. Most packages are already built and a minimal, but functional, Raspbian system with a GUI can be run.
